A Few Words About Varphi Studio

Founded in Alexandria, Varphi Studio is a bold and strong-visioned production house in Egypt. We are leading productions in shorts and feature films for filmmakers with a personal voice.

Varphi Studio is directed by Mohamed Kateb, Mohamed Kassaby, and Safwaan Attia. Our vision is to empower authentic, creative, and original collaborations in all the stages of films. We believe a powerful film can only be made through passion. We always aim to be present in the Egyptian and International markets by participating in international festivals and markets.

Our studio‘s first short film "Flying Salama" is the winner of the 2nd edition Sunbird Stories production grant. Our studio‘s first feature film "An Endless Night" was selected in several development workshops and platforms such as Beirut Cinema Platform 6th edition organized by Beirut DC, Jumpstart program 2022 by Durban FilmMart Institute in partnership with Produire au Sud, Nantes, and Cinephilia Advanced Lab 2022. We are currently working on several other short and feature film productions. We are always on the search for new projects.

Mohamed Kateb

Filmmaker | Producer​

A filmmaker and producer from Alexandria, Egypt, currently based in Hamburg, Germany. Influenced by human connections, city lights, and urban legends, he tell tales of everyday characters that are portrayals of the Egyptian society of today. He’s currently developing his debut fiction feature “An Endless Night” as a producer which was officially selected in the 6th edition of Beirut Cinema Platform organized by Beirut DC, and Jumpstart program by Durban FilmMart 2022. His latest short film “Flying Salama”, where he was the writer and producer, is the winner of the 2nd edition Sunbird Stories Production Grant. His short “Shawky” was selected to participate in Scriptwriting Klink by Goethe-Institut and Red Sea Film Festival, in cooperation with the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. “Ibn El-Leil”, his short film as a producer, was developed through several respected workshops. In 2014, he produced and directed the first Egyptian web series called “Plan B: The Door”.

Mohamed Kassaby

Filmmaker | Producer

A film director, screenwriter and producer from Egypt. His filmography includes his early 2017 short drama “The Last Breath”, his 2019 short road movie ”Inhabitants Of The Nile”, and ”Epilogue”, a short documentary which he created through the Self-reference Cinema Workshop in 2020. He won the Best Short Film prize for his 2019 semi-autobiographical film, ”That’s What Happened”, at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival, which was later screened at over 30 International Film Festivals. His upcoming short film project, “Ibn El-Leil”, has been developed in the Cinephilia Film Development Workroom. He recently wrapped up production on his fifth short film project as a director/producer, “Flying Salama”, a coming-of-age short film about the enduring magic of friendship. His debut feature film project, “An Endless Night”, a neo-noir film set in near future dystopian Cairo, is currently in development phase as it had its kick-off at the 6th edition of Beirut Cinema Platform.

Safwaan Attia

Filmmaker | Producer

A producer based in Alexandria Egypt. Affected by his city’s old stories, he uses his experience in project management and business development in filmmaking, film distribution, and creative industries with a particular focus on city tales and fantasy-realistic films. His filmography as a producer includes “An Endless Night”; a feature fiction drama, which was developed and selected in Beirut Cinema Platform 6th edition organized by Beirut DC 2022, Jumpstart program by Durban FilmMart 2022 and Cinephilia Advanced Lab 2022, “Flying Salama”; a short fiction drama,which was awarded with Sunbird Stories Production Grant launched by Cinephilia Productions and Filmlab Palestine, in partnership with El Gouna Film Festival 2021, “The Man with The Lemon Tree”; a short fiction drama, “Sometimes Mickey… Sometimes Donald”; a short fiction tragicomedy, and “Alo”, a short experimental docudrama, and “Plan B Series”; an online fiction miniseries.
